Largest empty circle centered on a query line

چکیده
The Largest Empty Circle problem seeks the largest circle centered within the convex hull of a set P of n points in R2 and devoid of points from P . In this paper, we introduce a query version of this well-studied problem. In our query version, we are required to preprocess P so that when given a query line Q, we can quickly compute the largest empty circle centered at some point on Q and within the convex hull of P . We present solutions for two special cases and the general case; all our queries run in O(log n) time. We restrict the query line to be horizontal in the first special case, which we preprocess in O(nα(n) log n) time and space, where α(n) is the slow growing inverse of the Ackermann’s function. When the query line is restricted to pass through a fixed point, the second special case, our preprocessing takes O(nα(n)O(α(n)) log n) time and space. We use insights from the two special cases to solve the general version of the problem with preprocessing time and space in O(n3 log n) and O(n3) respectively.

The Largest Empty Circle Problem
The largest empty circle (LEC) problem is defined on a set P and consists of finding the largest circle that contains no points in P and is also centered inside the convex hull of P . The LEC is always centered at either a vertex on the Voronoi diagram for P or on an intersection between a Voronoi edge and the convex hull of P . Thus, finding the LEC consists of constructing a Voronoi diagram a...
متن کاملQuerying for the Largest Empty Geometric Object in a Desired Location
We study new types of geometric query problems defined as follows: given a geometric set P , preprocess it such that given a query point q, the location of the largest circle that does not contain any member of P , but contains q can be reported efficiently. The geometric sets we consider for P are boundaries of convex and simple polygons, and point sets. While we primarily focus on circles as ...
متن کاملSmallest enclosing circle centered on a query line segment
Given a set of n points P = {p1, p2, . . . , pn} in the plane, we show how to preprocess P such that for any query line segment L we can report in O(log n) time the smallest enclosing circle whose center is constrained to lie on L . The preprocessing time and space complexity are O(n log n) and O(n) respectively. We then show how to use this data structure in order to compute the smallest enclo...
متن کاملComputational geometry and the design of aperture-synthesis telescopes I. A measure of the quality of the uv-plane coverage
When designing an aperture-synthesis telescope for use in astronomy it is essential to find a layout of the antennas on the site that provides good coverage of the uv-plane. Large holes in the distribution of baseline points in that plane are particularly undesirable, and so an algorithm was devised for locating all the holes in any given design and assessing whether they are unacceptably large...
متن کاملScalable and architecture independent parallel geometric algorithms with high probability optimal time
1 Abstract We present parallel computational geometry algorithms that are scalable, architecture independent, easy to implement, and have, with high probability, an optimal time complexity for uniformly distributed random input data. Our methods apply to multicomputers with arbitrary interconnection network or bus system. The following problems are studied in this paper: (1) lower envelope of l...
